Elder Care
Caring for Parents is something every one of us will eventually do. There are times where ‘broken’ relationships exist – like, when the nest ‘emptied’ out meant that all feelings of co-responsibility, and interactions ceased as well. However, by in large, that is not the case. Almost every adult – “baby boomer” – will sooner or later take part in making decisions for their Father and/or Mother.
One of the best sources to start you on this journey with some good direction is A Place for Mom.
Another great resource is here – especially when you are one of the primary caregivers.
Here are some other excellent resources in book form –

Health
Your Health – Let’s Talk Physical
The Good Book speaks of your body as being your Temple … it is what ‘houses’ your mind, and soul. I like that this body isn’t compared to some shack where my soul is just hanging out, or that my soul is living in some trailer that may blow away in the next storm. It’s the picture of something holy, something sacred – A Temple – and it behooves you and me to take good care of it … this flesh and bones that holds our essence is a mighty valuable dwelling place.

Meal Time and Good Eats
You know, Meal Time with some good eats is a wonderful thing. It used to be that every family had a time of day that they met at The Gathering Place (the kitchen/dining room table). Ahhhh…. Our sacred, all but abandoned Meal Time … I am not talking about ‘just grabbing a bite’.
Read more on The Gathering Place at Abundance.
There are oodles of great cook books out there – this is the place to share a few of you favorites but also, share ideas or books on making your Meal Time delightful for your family.
I have several cookbooks that are literally falling apart. Joy of Cooking is one of my all time favorites, and I have one that is only about making Chocolate Desserts, and a lot of us probably have that family cookbook or the one from the Association or church … those are usually made up of favorite ‘pot-luck’ recipes — mmmm— so very yummy.
Home Cookin’ is a Family Affair is our Baughman recipe book — it has the recipes of my Mom’s side of the family – there were nine kids in all and even though they are all gone now I have this cook book and I can still feel a closeness to Mom, Aunt Audrey, Aunt Edna, Aunt Mim, Aunt Sara, Aunt Dot and all the cousins who added theirs …. so very, very cool! It’s out of print now but, I am beginning to think we’ll have to re-publish for it for all the grandkids and greats that have come along!
Here’s a pretty good list that should help your mealtimes come alive, give you some ideas on how to incorporate the kids in the kitchen and some marvelous health-oriented cookbooks for those who are having to adjust due to diabetes, high cholesterol, or just looking to eat healthier.

Finances
Well, to me there’s a whole lot more to ‘abundance’ than what might show with only the ‘dollars’.
I believe we have what we have because of choices we make along the way. For me and my house we decided way back in the courting days of this mom and pop that I would be a ’stay at home’ mom. We knew that might mean that there’d be times of pinching pennies and maybe doing without and also cutting back, but because I was able to stay at home there were also home- cooked meals every day, children that were home educated, and so many other riches that were experienced in the everyday moments of our lives together. I never felt ‘poor’.
But, whatever your choices as a family, absolutely, we need to have a Financial Plan so, where do we go for advice?
This first is my favorite of favs –
God’s Plan for Financial Success, by Leroy Brownlow. It’s a consise, realistic, down-to-earth workable system and also, I might add, beautifully written. You truly feel richer for the read and enabled to accomplish good things in life.
We have also attended workshops that were beneficial – for example, Steve Diggs is author of and has vibrant presentations to go along with his book, Free to Succeed. We genuinely learned a great deal that week end. Steve is a great guy and super funny too. I love his story and I believe you will too. http://www.stevediggs.com/Copy%20Free%20To%20Succeed.htm
Still one more that is an absolute must-read is by Alton Howard – Money Grow$ on Trees. It is a fun book to learn from and full of excellent down to earth advice – lessons on how to Make, Manage, and Master your Money!
I know the world right now is filled with people offering their 2 cents worth on how to be financially fit. Be careful who you follow though. Their advice really may be only worth that much.
For Teens -
There is someone to be valued in this day and time and that is Dave Ramsey. Our 15 year old son was privileged to be a part of a class last school year – Dave Ramsey’s Foundations in Personal Finance – you can learn more here: http://www.daveramsey.com/school/
Here’s a fabulous blog that deals with finances almost totally – he’s got oodles of information and a fabulous list of books that will be sure to help you with any and all of your financial questions.

This new paperback edition of Captivating: Unveiling the Mystery of a Woman’s Soul encourages women to connect with their deepest feminine desires and learn to see God as their ultimate lover and hero. |
| Wild at Heart: Discovering the Secret of a Man’s Soul By John Eldredge Helping men rediscover their masculine heart, Wild at Heart, a guide to understanding Christian manhood and Christian men, offers a refreshing break from the chorus of voices urging men to be more responsible, reliable, dutiful … and dead. God designed men to be dangerous, says Eldredge. Simply look at the dreams and desires written in every boy’s heart: to be a hero, to be a warrior, to live a life of adventure and risk. Sadly, most men abandon those dreams and desires—aided by a Christianity that feels like nothing more than pressure to be a “nice guy.” It’s no wonder that many men avoid church, and those who go are often passive and bored to death. In this provocative book, Eldredge gives women a look inside the true heart of a man and gives men permission to be what God designed them to be—dangerous, passionate, alive, and free. |
