Hearth and Home
It seems like all the US bloggers and facebookers are talking about Autumn/Fall – so many people love autumn and I do too! The colors of the trees to the crispness of the air, it’s just so refreshing and invigorating. I am enjoying you all enjoying it while here in Santa Rosa we continue in the Rainy season of almost daily rains, a few hours of sunshine and then really cool evenings/nights. And green, green everywhere with lots of flowering vegetation. It is beautiful and I love it but … I remember “Autumn” of other years …
Most of us like to match the season – we pull out warmer clothes, we cook differently, add a little here and there in the home, and even decorate the yard all to match this wonderful season.
Here are some items that may add a little warmth and coziness to your lives.

Autumn: A Spiritual Biography of the Season By Edited by Gary Schmidt & Susan M. Felch Gary Schmidt, professor of literature at Calvin College, has culled a collection of thoughts and reflections to aid in clarifying the spiritual themes of the season. Take advantage of this opportunity to explore centuries of fine literature focused on fall. From Autumn: A Spiritual Biography of the Season Autumn, with all its traditional images of colorful trees, frost-covered pumpkins, and piles of wood stored up against the cold of winter, can be a season filled with anticipation. The harvest, the imminent onset of cold and snow, the resumption of old routines, and the beginning of the school year all require preparation and planning. If summer has been something of a pause, autumn helps us to see the passage of time more clearly. Autumn is a season of fruition and reaping, of thanksgiving and celebration of abundance and goodness of the earth. But it is also a season that starkly and realistically encourages us to see our own limitations. Warm and stirring pieces by E. B. White, Anne Lamott, P. D. James, Julian of Norwich, May Sarton, Kimiko Hahn, and many others in this beautiful book rejoice in autumn as a time of preparation and reflection, when the results of hard labor are ripe for harvest. |

More on Hearth and Home ….
“There’s no place like home” is a old expression probably made popular with Dorothy’s famous lines in The Wizard of Oz. But, you know what? In the real world of the here and now … well, it is absolutely TRUE! There is no place like our own home, be it ever so humble. I don’t care if you live in a mansion, a bungalow, a cabin, a mobile home or a tree house, our home is where we ‘hang our hearts’. Or at least it should be.
You can read more on this topic at Abundance … just remember, if your home hasn’t been what it should have been, don’t despair, you can start today building the Home Of Your Dreams – a wonderful place where those you love can flourish! Let the transformation begin!
Here’s some great tools I’ve come across — but, do you have some you can share, too?
Amazing Families

amazing and I love them all! Check it out for yourself!

One of the ways we feel ‘at home’ in our houses is to have Christian decor … little reminders of who you are sitting here and there can be a reminder to keep God in the middle of life and it’s wondrous adventures.

All of the projects around your place would be much easier if you had a sheltered place to work, with room for all of your tools and work tables and storage space for your supplies. You just might need a workshop!
You can get started on one right now with these plans. In fact, you can even learn how to build your own shop or work with your contractor to save big on construction costs. Now, you can choose from 41 great designs and print all of the building plans, as often as you want, with one easy purchase. And, your cost will be less than single set of shed plans from many other websites! I love DIY (do it yourself) projects and after you check out this site, you will see “you can do it”. It’s great to have the whole family building together – the sense of accomplishment is something nothing else can compare to. If a group of teens can build a ‘house’ in a day in Honduras, then a family can use these simple instructions and build a small out-building. My son-in-law chose to go this route and saved his family 100’s of $$.
Take a look and start dreaming of building!

| Everybody’s Normal ‘Til You Get to Know Them By John Ortberg Since Christians often talk about community as one of their highest ideals it is shocking when they realize that, as Henri Nouwen insightfully noted, “Community is the place where the person you least want to live with always lives.” Fortunately, John Ortberg shares our passion for community and is able to teach us how to live with and love one another. With the insight of a counselor and the heart of a pastor, Ortberg has written one of the best contemporary considerations of community. |

| Father Fiction: Chapters for a Fatherless Generation By Donald Miller Growing up, Donald Miller wished Bill Cosby was his father. Raised by his mother, Donald felt the painful lack of a father figure – and he has transformed his pain into a passion for helping others find mentors. His memoir addresses fatherless men, enlightens parents, and helps readers understand the need for strong role models. With his vivid storytelling and introspection, Donald takes readers through his coming of age with key topics like falling in love, authority issues, generational interaction, work ethic, staying with the people we love, the life-changing impact of finding the right person for you, and following your dreams. A memoir with a message, this book calls readers to envision how their own personal paincan be transformed into the “authority of empathy,” as they share what they know with someone who needs a guiding hand. | The Great Omission: Reclaiming Jesus’ Essential Teachings on Discipleship By Dallas Willard The last command Jesus gave before he ascended to heaven was the Great Commission, the call to “make disciples of all the nations.” But Christians have responded by making “Christians,” not “disciples.” This, according to renowned Christian thinker Dallas Willard, has been the church’s Great Omission. Drawing upon previously published articles from magazines such as Christianity Today and Leadership Journal as well as remarks given at various conferences, Willard challenges the thought that we can be Christians without being disciples. He calls on believers to restore what should be the heart of Christianity – being active disciples of Jesus Christ. Willard shows us that in the school of life, we are apprentices of the Teacher whose brilliance encourages us to rise above traditional church understanding and embrace the true meaning of discipleship – an active, concrete, 24/7 life with Jesus. |
Magnificence!
My newest post on Road to Abundance is highlighting my Mom. I love words and one that is especially beautiful to me is magnificence, or magnificent. In fact, I love this word so much it is in the byline of my Reflections blog.
Here’s one definition …
mag·nif·i·cent/magˈnifəsənt/Adjective 1. Impressively beautiful, elaborate, or extravagant; striking. 2. Very good; excellent.
And so, the title … the Magnificence of March. It is the month the Lord chose to give a tremendous gift to the world … my Mom! She was born March 13, 1919. This coming Sunday she would have been 92 – wow! I believe she led a quiet but magnificent life.
You can choose this day to live a life that is different – one that is better than average, one that matters, a life that when you are 80 years old, sitting in a rocking chair on some veranda looking at the view before you … leaves you content and at peace that the inner view is equally beautiful … even magnificent!
Here are some great books that can help you figure out your why, determine you path and remind you that life is more than taking up space … there are jobs to be done, works to accomplish that have your name written all over them and IF you say no to them, they will never be done. That person will never have the encouragement you were meant to give.

Marriage
I am adding another book to my library and to this site … it is one of two books that promises to make an incredible difference in the life of your marriage. The other book isn’t at CBD but I will still list it directly from the author’s site. These two books, unfortunately, will not help you in ‘re-creating’ your husbands. There will be no instructions on how to make him obey your requests. However, I have it on good report that the marriage you always dreamed of may be yours … in fact, I have heard you can actually have a marriage beyond your highest expectation.

Created to Be His Help Meet: Discover How God Can Make Your Marriage Glorious By Debi Pearl Created to be His Help Meet mentors women on how to have a heavenly marriage. The author makes the argument that men and women were created by God to play different roles in society. A woman acting like a man creates a unisex society, which is a senseless society. Each chapter provides instruction, examples, letters from women, and concludes with a “Time To Consider” section. Paperback. From the author: “… I had no idea God had so much to say to us ladies until I began going through God’s Word verse by verse, writing the different sections of Created to be His Help Meet. Many times as I read a passage, I would say to my husband, “I’m not going to include those verses in my book because if I do the ladies (of any religious group you can think of including my own) will not like my book or promote it.” My dear husband would say to me, “If God thought it was important enough to inspire it as part of his Word to us, then you should include it.” And so I would cringe and add one more controversial subject after another…” |

There is so much debate and talk on Marriage, Divorce and Remarriage … I thought about recommending a book and then I decided that if you are questioning this subject or have pre-conceived ideas or thoughts on it then you could go here to CBD’s page on the subject. You’ll see that there is over 65 books (just click the purple highlighted letters) written by Bible teachers and scholars … wow!
However the true source is Jesus from the The Book and it says:
Matthew 19:7-9 (New International Version)
7″Why then,” they asked, “did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?”
8Jesus replied, “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. 9I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery.”

Celebration of a Moment
Moments of celebration aren’t new to me. In fact, I normally attempt to practice celebration each and every day. This morning, however, I was noticeably not celebrating my life. This is due to several circumstances beyond my control but I do know I haven’t done my part in keeping the negativity ‘in check’. Lowell, noticing I was having a ‘rough’ morning, a little ‘low’ time if you will, suggested I re-read one of our favorite chapters from a best-loved book of ours.

A solitary place ... we all need one.
The book I am talking about is The Life You’ve Always Wanted, by John Ortberg. He is by far one of our favorite authors and this is absolutely one of our favs of his. The chapter in the book is Chapter 4 A “Dee Dah Day”. My first exposure to A Dee Dah Day was probably close to 6 or 7 years ago and we’ve read the book together at least 2X and once on our own. Each time I let A Dee Dah Day ‘get to me’, I am better for it. Now, Lowell is teaching the book in Sunday morning class. If you have never read one Mr. Ortberg’s books, you’d do yourself a service by doing so sooner than later.

On Being Single
Over in Road to Abundance I wrote a note to celebrate Singleness in All Its Glory. I wrote it because I don’t want anyone to have some sort of misguided idea or some preconception that you can only live in Abundance if you are Married. My point is that actually no one will live in abundance until they love themselves and develop to their fullest potential. I believe we all have to take ourself where we are and make a decision to be happy. Make a conscious effort to be content … only then, will you see abundance all around … whether you are single or married.
Here are some great resources for the Single in our world. Never assume you have to make it on your own. When you are stumbling through every day, struggling to maintain peace in your own heart, or are living in dissatisfaction then look to those who are happy, who seem fulfilled, who have answers and get the guidance you may be lacking.
These are a few suggestions of many resources available. You can browse here or go directly to CBD and look around. Either way, know there is hope for an outstanding life in singleness. You can rejoice in who you are, just where you are in life.

Singles at the Crossroads: A Fresh Perspective on Christian Singleness By Albert Y. Hsu / Inter-varsity Press Nearly half of adults today are unmarried yet most churches emphasize marriage and family, leaving many Christian singles feeling marginalized or alienated. Though they look to Jesus and Paul as role models, many suspect they would be more acceptable to the church if they settled down and got married. Hsu challenges this view. Moving beyond pat answers, Hsu proposes that singleness and marriage are both opportunities in which to follow Jesus. Singles at the Crossroads points the way to a Christian community where all members are valued, Jew and Gentile, slave and free, male and female, married and single. |

Love that Works: The Heart & Science of Giving By Bruce Brander “Who taught us our oddly unsuccessful kind of love? Why, the princess and the frog, and a girl who lived with dwarfs, and a sooty young woman who lost a glass slipper that, as luck would have it, was found by a handsome prince. Our society is shot through with fables of romance that we absorb from earliest childhood.”Love That Works is a highly readable book that draws on history, theology, literature, psychology, and sociology to show why romance is a notoriously poor basis for stable, loving relationships. It provides essential background to those studying relationships in their own lives and in our society. Author Bruce Brander illuminates the reasons we find it so hard to find lasting love and he offers insights to guide us to greater emotional health and spiritual maturity. By applying lessons from history to our fast-paced world, we can not only learn to fall in love; we can also learn to rise to love. |
Yeah, your heart and soul. What makes up the real you? When all is said and done, you are alone at the end of the day, what are you left with? A heart full of hope and desires for the best? Knowledge that things will get better because that is what you decided? Will you fulfill your role in life and do it well because that is who you are? Or, are you poisoned by negativity, drowning in a sea of hopelessness, calling down judgment and blaming all those who make up your world? Just who are you?
There’s so many great books out there on what makes us who we are and how to transform us into something even better.
Read more on this in a note I posted in Abundance.
Here are a few of the books that have rocked my world (given me a foundation) … each one on becoming a better you!
